Metso innovates with the RapidDraw3D Valve Model Generator

Metso has engineered a very dynamic software called the RapidDraw3D Valve Model Generator. This software is going to be anything but a valve and piping design engineers favourite. The RapidDraw3D allows users to quickly create realistic, to-scale, 3D valve assemblies and export them to any CAD program format at the users end for use in plant piping diagrams. The user can always come back and modify the file created as it remains on the RapidDraw3D server for upto 90days. Bruce Weetherbee, Metso’s Sr. Engineering Manager describes the unique feature of this dynamic software as "Drawing simple boxes to represent sophisticated valve assemblies in the CAD program leaves a lot of unanswered questions, such as Which components? Pepperl Fuchs VDM28-15 laser sensor effectively detects steel at 1400 DegF

A leading Hot Strip Mill in the midwest US was found to have serious problems with detecting hot slabs of steel at 1400 Deg F. Using an inductive prox sensor or mechanical limit switch was just not going to happen, because a slab of steel at 1400 °F will render them useless at less than an inch away. Infrared radiation (IR)detectors seemed most appropriate but are usually housed in heavy-duty housings, are water-cooled, and cost thousands of dollars besides running the risk of exposure to very high temperatures that could melt the IR detectors. Engineers at the mill were looking for a way to detect the presence of the strip or slab of steel at certain points of the process between the roughing mills, which start shaping the roll, and the finishing mills, which complete the process. Pepperl Fuchs implemented the VDM28-15 laser sensor which operates based on the (PRT)Pulse rating technology.The VDM28-15 laser sensor emits extremely high bursts of light periodically rather than a continuous emission of lower light energy. These high-energy bursts of light are emitted from the sensor to the steel and reflected back to the sensor at long distances, which reduces the ambient temperature at the sensor’s location. Using this technology, the VDM28-15 laser sensor effectively detected the hot slab of steel at temperatures of 600 °F to 1400 °F. Being a distance measurement sensor it can also precisely measure the thickness of steel all this at a fraction of the cost of IR detectors. DOWNLOAD VALVE SOLUTIONS APP. GO, the next generation gas over oil pipeline valve actuators from Rotork

The new generation of Rotork GO actuators has undergone an important upgrade, including streamlined manufacturing and product improvements. The rotork GO range uses the pipeline gas as the motive power source. The gas is delivered to oil tanks that convert the gas into hydraulic pressure and this pressurised hydraulic oil is used to drive Rotork scotch-yoke quarter-turn or linear valve actuators. Using pressurised oil as the driving force provides powerful and smooth actuator control and isolates the cylinder from the pipeline gas. This prevents contaminants from entering the hydraulic cylinder, eliminating corrosion and seal deterioration and extending actuator life. At the centre of the gas-over-oil system, the multi-function manifold block integrates gas control functions to facilitate a wide range of valve control options. A dedicated pump is utilised in each operating direction to prevent leaking or contamination between the gas-over-oil tanks. The manifold has the facility for a high-flow hand pump, pressure relief and a locking handle for safe commissioning. High pressure and low pressure control logic designs are also available, together with torque limiting devices for valve and drive train protection. Finally the rotork GO range has a robust new design, which is lighter and more compact.
