Chevron is using System 1 technology from GE’s Bently Nevada product line to monitor from a single control room in Houston, installations and hundreds of pieces of equipment around the world. GE workers have placed thousands of sensors inside pumps, turbines, compressors and other field equipment. The sensors monitor and gather heat signals, vibrations, flow rates that amount to terabytes of data, and transmit it across the Industrial Internet connecting people, networks, and machines. This unstructured data is then run through machine based algorithms to provide more actionable data that help engineers maximize oil and gas production rates, monitor corrosion and material fatigue in pipelines, optimize refinery fuel consumption, schedule maintenance, and cut unplanned shutdowns. GE estimates that 1 percent reduction in capital expenditures in oil and gas exploration and development could yield $90 billion in savings over the next 15 years. System 1 is only one product in GE’s Industrial Internet services portfolio.
